Smash Burger Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 for best flavor)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 slices of american cheese
  • 4 burger buns
  • 1 shallot
  • Optional toppings: lettuce, tomato, pickles, onions, ketchup, mustard, mayo

Secret Sauce Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon of ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons of mayo
  • 2 teaspoons of pickle juice
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Additional Tools

  • Grill press or a flat-bottomed cup
  • Wax paper

Whether you’re grilling for a crowd or a weeknight dinner, these Smash Burgers are a quick and delicious way to satisfy your cravings.

    Instructions for Smash Burgers

    1. Season the ground beef with salt and pepper, then divide it into 8 equal balls (about 2 oz each). Thinly slice your shallot using a knife or mandolin.
    2. Prepare your secret sauce by mixing ketchup, mayonnaise, pickle juice, salt, and pepper in a small bowl.
    3. Preheat the grill to medium-high heat.
    4. Once the grill is ready, place your greased griddle topper on the grill.
    5. Arrange two small piles of sliced shallots on the griddle topper, then place four meatballs on the griddle—two directly on the shallots and two on their own.
    6. Using a grill press and wax paper, smash the meatballs as thin as possible. Close the grill and cook for about three minutes.
    7. Flip the patties and cook for an additional two minutes. Add a slice of cheese to the plain patties, and place the buns on the griddle topper. Cover the grill and cook for one more minute. (Note: the time used in this recipe is for a fully cooked burger as the thinness of smash burgers cook very quickly).
    8. Remove the patties and buns from the griddle topper. Repeat the process with the remaining patties and buns.
    9. To the assemble smash burgers, stack the shallot-topped patty with the cheese-topped patty, add a dollop of secret sauce, and finish with your favorite toppings
